Benzocaine hydrochloride is the hydrochloride form of the local anesthetic benzocaine. Its pharmacological effects are the same as benzocaine, but its anesthetic effect is weaker than that of procaine. It is slowly absorbed locally and has a long-lasting effect. Since it is insoluble in water, it cannot be used as an infiltration anesthesia. It has analgesic and antipruritic effects. The drug is usually made into powder or ointment. It is clinically used to treat wounds, ulcers, burns, skin abrasions and hemorrhoids.
